Amy’s Army, a Northern Virginia nonprofit dedicated to providing financial support to families in Northern VA affected by cancer, will host the eighth annual Rock, Paper, Cocktails on Saturday, September 8 from 7pm-10pm. The event, at Westwood Country Club in Vienna, VA, will raise money to pay bills associated with the diagnosis and treatment of any cancer, living-expense emergencies, and non-medical expenses related to medical treatment. In 2007, when Amy Howle was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer, her girlfriends immediately rallied to support Amy, her husband, and their young children. What started out as a small Pink Ribbon Walk to raise funds for cancer research has evolved into Amy’s Army, a nonprofit with a mission to provide financial support to Northern Virginia families affected by cancer. Eleven years after its first event, Amy’s Army is continuing to honor Amy’s wishes by helping local families manage the financial fallout of a cancer diagnosis. According to a recent US News and World Report article, ongoing cancer treatment costs can jump into the tens of thousands of dollars per year not including health insurance premiums and lost wages. Proceeds from this latest event will go directly to support Inova Life with Cancer and the Amy’s Army Grant Program. “We had no idea that what started as our friends pulling together to help Amy and her family would ever turn into something helping families across Northern VA. We’re so proud we can support so many kids and parents through Amy’s legacy,” said Amy’s Army co-founder Kate Whitelock. In its ninth year, the Rock, Paper, Cocktails Gala combines jewelry (rock), art, gifts and fashion (paper), yummy food and beverages. The gala will be held at the Westwood Country Club in Vienna, VA on Saturday, September 8 from 7pm-10pm. The evening will consist of raffles, auctions, music, hors d’oeuvres, desserts, signature cocktails, shopping, and celebration to raise support for Amy’s Army’s grant programs.
